The proposed West Cumbria coal mine has been halted through an opening of public inquiry following a successful campaign led by WaicUp.org, in collaboration with Coal Action Network. A petition with 111,475 signatures handed into the House of Lords triggered a public inquiry, forcing the UK Government to reconsider the project, marking a significant victory for climate action.
Elijah McKenzie-Jackson, a lead organizer, stated:
"This victory proves that collective action works. 111,475 people stood together and refused to let the UK backtrack on its climate promises. This isn’t just about one coal mine—it’s about holding leaders accountable for the future they claim to protect.”
This decision signals a turning point in UK climate policy, demonstrating the growing power of grassroots activism in shaping the future of energy and environmental justice.
