Reflecting on the TIME Earth Awards

April 2024
Op-Ed

Standing in the room at the TIME Earth Awards, surrounded by some of the most influential changemakers and visionaries in climate action, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come—and how much further we have to go. Being recognized for my work in climate justice and creative activism was an incredible honor, but more than anything, it was a reminder of the responsibility we all share in shaping a sustainable future.

The event wasn’t just about celebration—it was about action. Throughout the night, I had the privilege of speaking with Jane Fonda, John Kerry, and Jessica Sibley, each of whom shared powerful insights on the future of climate activism and the critical role of youth leadership, policy reform, and media influence in driving systemic change.

My conversation with Jane Fonda reinforced the importance of intergenerational activism, as we discussed how direct action and grassroots movements have historically shaped progress. John Kerry and I spoke about the global urgency of implementing climate policies that prioritize justice, ensuring that decision-makers align with the scientific reality of the climate crisis.

With Jessica Sibley, TIME’s CEO, I reflected on the power of the free press and truthful storytelling in shaping climate action. We discussed how unbiased, fact-based journalism is crucial in holding leaders accountable, amplifying marginalized voices, and ensuring that climate narratives remain rooted in reality rather than greenwashed messaging. The role of media in educating, informing, and mobilizing people is more vital than ever in an era of disinformation and climate denial.

Beyond the discussions, seeing so many familiar faces felt like home—a climate community built over five years, strengthened by shared experiences, challenges, and victories. These connections are a reminder that this movement is not just about policies and protests but about the people who dedicate their lives to protecting the planet.

Thank you to TIME Magazine for hosting and amplifying such important causes with their influence and platform. These events matter, and they need to exist. They provide the space for critical conversations, collaboration, and action that will define the future of climate justice.

Recognition like this isn’t about individual achievements—it’s about amplifying movements, uplifting voices, and ensuring that real solutions reach the people and communities most impacted by the climate crisis.
